In September 2003 the Manitoba Eco-Network established a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) / Mapping Centre to assist Manitoba's community of non-profit organizations in developing their capacity to gather, store, analyze and manipulate spatial information at an affordable cost. The primary goal of this service is to enhance efforts to educate the public, build a supportive constituency and contribute constructively to public policy.

We help to identify and carry out projects that will benefit the community in general.  This starts with the possibility of generating custom maps and the establishment of whole Geographic Information Systems or interactive maps that can be used for educational purposes.  A prominent example of the later is the Winnipeg and Region Greenmap, which provides interactive access to green resources in Winnipeg and the surrounding region.

The Mapping Centre welcomes partnerships with community colleges and universities whose students are interested in mapping and its applications, through the provision of placements for practicum and work experience. It will also provide opportunities for young people to work on real life conservation and land use issues with community groups. In addition, the Centre has the capability to host students and volunteers seeking practical community-based GIS experience.
