job opportunity (summer) – Bilingual Interpreter – FortWhyte Alive

The Bilingual Interpreter will work over the summer of 2017 at FortWhyte Alive, Canada’s premier non-profit, interpretive, and recreation centre situated in the heart of the prairies.  Its square mile of lakes, forest, marsh, meadow and farmland provides a haven of adventure as well as natural and cultural history education for local, national and international visitors of all ages.

Job Summary:

As a member of the Education Team, the Bilingual Summer Interpreter will participate in school, youth, and public program delivery with a special emphasis on French programming.  This Interpreter will play a unique role in the building of FortWhyte Alive’s French services infrastructure.  The position entails the utilization of leadership, public relations and communication skills and the acquisition and application of specific environmental-related knowledge in a public education role.

Principal Tasks:

1.            Program Delivery (75%)

  • Shadow different interpreters to learn delivery techniques, styles and program content
  • Interpret for school/youth and public groups in both official languages
  • Coordinate school programs, including assembling program supplies, preparing schedules, and assisting volunteer interpreters
  • Participate in seasonal training programs for volunteer and staff interpreters
  • Mentor volunteer interpreters 

2.            Research and Writing (20%)

  • Assist with special projects related to extending French services
  • Revise and evaluate French school programs in conjunction with the Director of Education (meeting Manitoba curriculum standards)
  • Revise French school program evaluation forms as needed
  • Work with Bilingual Heritage Interpreter to market French programs to teachers and to potential French-speaking volunteer interpreters

3.            Other duties as assigned (5%)

 Basic Hiring Criteria:

  • University/college student working towards a degree/diploma in education, recreation, science or tourism
  • Ability to speak French fluently
  • Proven experience working with children (a child abuse registry check and criminal records check are required before position begins)
  • Knowledge of some Manitoba flora and fauna, Manitoba ecosystems and emerging environmental issues an asset
  • Translation experience an asset
  • Class 4 licence an asset
  • Aboriginal/Métis heritage an asset
  • Certification in First Aid, CPRan asset
  • Private transportation to FWA (no bus service available)
