Since 2003, the award-winning FortWhyte Farms program has been working with youth from diverse cultural backgrounds in Winnipeg. Using the model of sustainable urban agriculture to build confidence and leadership skills, FortWhyte Farms provides employment training and instills values of individual and community self-reliance.

Position Title: FortWhyte Farms Crew Leader

Supervisor: FortWhyte Farms Program Coordinator

Hours of Work: Full-time (37.5 hours per week), 8:00-4:00 (with a rotation of some evenings and weekends)

Dates: May 8 – August 31, 2016

Job Summary: The FortWhyte Farms Crew Leader supports the operations of FortWhyte Farms, a program designed to grow youth, food and community.  Each crew leader mentors and supervises 4-5 youth interns throughout the summer. The program develops social, and employment skills in youth from diverse socio-economic backgrounds by engaging them in the sustainable production, harvest and marketing of natural agricultural products using FortWhyte’s diverse 640-acre land base for the multi-faceted operations.


Principal Tasks:

Farm Educational Program and Operational Support (95%)

May and June

  • Work directly with youth participants in kitchen and farm operations
  • Assist with farm operations including greenhouse, garden, medicine garden, feeding livestock and farm upkeep
  • Participate in training and preparation for summer program with farm assistants and assistant crew leaders (ACL)
  • Assist with summer internship training planning and facilitation

July and August

  • Provide guidance and timely feedback to youth interns (“crew members”)
  • Train, motivate and hold crew members accountable in daily tasks
  • Participate in planning and delivery of weekly events (cooking community lunches, off-site field trips and workshops, community service work)
  • Facilitate group discussions and goal setting, and
  • Model teamwork, commitment, and open communication.

 Other FortWhyte Farms duties as assigned (5%)

 Basic Hiring Criteria:

  • Experience in working in mentorship role with underserved youth
  • Some level of post-secondary education or relevant work experience
  • Initiative and proven problem solving skills
  • Physically fit and ability to work outdoors for long periods of time
  • Valid Driver’s License and access to transportation
  • Landscaping or agricultural experience an asset
  • Food Handler’s Certification, First Aid and CPR an asset
  • Knowledge of FWA site an asset
