Summer Position: Farm Assistant

Supervisor: Farm Operations Coordinator

Position Type: Seasonal – Summer

Dates: May 8 – August 31, 2017(with possible extension into September)

Hours of Work: Full-time (37.5 hours per week with some evenings / weekends)

Job Summary: Under the direction of the FortWhyte Farms Operations Coordinator, work as

a team member and take a leadership role in undertaking the following tasks with attention to

worker safety and stewardship.


Principal Tasks:

Farm Operations (95%)


  • Assist in greenhouse management and horticulture including seeding, transplanting, and fertilizing
  • Assist in garden preparation and planting, including weeding, watering, pest management and other tasks as assigned

Pastured Livestock (chickens, pigs, rabbits):

  • Attend to daily needs of livestock, including feeding, watering, transportation, fencing, butchering, health and well- being

Market / CSA:

  • Harvest, wash, package and display vegetables and farm products for sale
  • Assist customers, provide excellent customer service, handle cash

Maintenance & Landscaping:

  • Maintain farm buildings and yard site, including lawns, deck, fences, signage and tools
  • Cleaning and maintenance of greenhouse, barn, garage and farm headquarters as assigned

 Other Duties As Assigned (5%)


Basic Hiring Criteria:

  • Experience in small-scale farming (horticulture and/or pastured livestock)
  • Physically fit and capable of manual, outdoor labour with animals and bees
  • Flexible work schedule (some evenings and weekends)
  • Experience working with underserved and diverse youth
  • Excellent customer service
  • Ability to work independently/ self-directed, as well as in a team
  • Demonstrated dedication and commitment to the work of FortWhyte Farms and the mission and mandate of FortWhyte Alive
  • Demonstrated work ethic, motivation and leadership

Valid Driver’s License (Class 4 preferred), First Aid, CPR and Food Handler’s Certificate an Asset
