Backyard Composting Co-ordinator - Resource Conservation Manitoba

The Position: Resource Conservation Manitoba (RCM), a non-profit community organization, seeks an independent, energetic and organized individual to fill a position with our Compost Action Project (CAP), providing public education on composting practices and benefits for Manitoba residents. The Co-ordinator will promote backyard composting and vermicomposting through various means such as
organizing and delivering workshops, co-ordinating Master Composter courses, staffing home composting displays at community events, responding to telephone and e-mail inquiries, and coordinating volunteers who assist with composting initiatives. The co-ordinator will work co-operatively with RCM’s co-ordinator of community composting services.

Responsibilities:
Principal activities include:
• preparing and delivering workshops and short courses on composting for various audiences including the general public, schools, workplaces and community groups
• staffing composting displays at community events
• handling inquiries for composting information and referrals via email, internet and phone
• coordinating RCM’s Master Composter Volunteer Network which includes assigning volunteers with opportunities (workshops, displays, events, bin construction, special projects), organizing meetings, preparing a newsletter, and maintaining ongoing communication with volunteers
• supervising temporary staff for special projects
• keeping RCM’s composting web pages current with upcoming workshops and events, new publications, and updated links
• developing print and web-site resources as required
• developing and implementing an annual project work plan for backyard services
• preparing grant applications, managing project budget, preparing reports
• responding to media requests
• assisting with community composting initiatives, as required.

Qualifications:
Must be self-motivated, reliable and able to work collaboratively without close supervision. Key qualifications include:
knowledge of basic composting principles and techniques
demonstrated ability in public speaking and presentations
research, writing, interpersonal and communication skills at a professional level
experience in organizing workshops and events
experience in handling media requests for interviews and information
experience coordinating and supervising volunteers and employees
ability to self-organize and work independently
budgeting and project management skills and experience
willingness to work occasional evening and weekend hours and to travel in Manitoba, as required
experience in the non-profit sector
experience in maintaining records and writing reports
knowledge of environmental issues and a commitment to sustainability

Term Contract Position: August 4, 2009 to March 31, 2010, with a good possibility of extension, depending on funding. There is a three-month probationary period.
Salary Range: $17.00 - $18.50 per hour (35 hours per week)

Growing Local Conference Coordinator

The Manitoba Food Charter Inc. and conference planning committee is seeking a contract conference coordinator to work with a planning team and staff to coordinate the February 2010 Growing Local: Building our Manitoba Food Movement conference.

The position will be $18 per hour plus MERCS or a contract of $20/hr up to a maximum of 300 hours.

Reporting to the Executive Director and the conference planning committee, the successful applicant will work with the planning committee, additional project staff, volunteers, and general public. The successful applicant will assist the planning team in the coordination of a two day food security networking and education forum to be held in February 2010 in Winnipeg Manitoba and produce a conference report.

Interviews will take place in July/August with a main start date of December 2009 and some conference planning meeting attendance prior to December.
Job Description

    * To work with the conference planning committee
    * Coordinate planning meetings and keep detailed meeting minutes
    * Coordinate all event logistics before and during the conference
          o Develop promotional materials and promote the conference
          o Develop and coordinate event registrations
          o Prepare conference packages
          o Coordinate event finances
          o Coordinate catering (local food) and oversee nutrition breaks
          o Coordinate information booths
          o Coordinate mailings and electronic communication
          o Coordinate travel arrangements and subsidies
          o Prepare funder recognition signage
          o Coordinate conference volunteers
          o Coordinate written and visual recording of the conference
          o Coordinate evaluation transcription
          o All other conference details
    * Coordinate presenters and logistics
    * Coordinate workshop schedules
    * Develop sponsorship packages and solicit sponsors
    * Develop and disseminate conference report
    * Assist with other projects and tasks when required

The successful applicant will be/have:

    * Proven experience organizing community events and conferences
    * Highly organized with proven attention to detail
    * Strong written and oral communication skills
    * Strong interpersonal skills and enjoy working with the public
    * Be self motivated and a team player
    * Able to multitask and meet deadlines
    * Able to work flexible hours
    * Able to exercise independent judgment  
    * High level of computer knowledge, Word and Excel
    * An interest in and knowledge of food security issues is considered an asset

Orioles Bike Cage Community Engagement Officer (Contractor)

Orioles Bike Cage (444 Burnell Street) is a community-owned bicycle resource centre.  We strive to create a bicycle-friendly community where everyone has a reliable bike and the skills to maintain it and to share our knowledge of bicycle repair in a welcoming environment.

The Bike Cage is seeking a part-time, 4-month, contract Community Engagement Officer.  This position will be of interest to an outgoing, self-motivated person with strong communication skills and a passion for community and for bikes.  The Community Engagement Officer will co-design and deliver community outreach/involvement, volunteer coordination and a children’s bike event.

Contract requirements are estimated at 20 hours per week; contract value is $4,000.

Volunteer Opportunities:

Tree Planting at the Assiniboine Park

Nature Manitoba will be holding two tree planting events in June for the Assiniboine Park Riparian Forest Project. 

Anyone is free to volunteer. 

Dates: 
1)  June 17th from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM
2)  June 27th from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM

If you are interested in volunteering your time to plant trees, you can meet the other planters at the end of the pedestrian footbridge in the Park at either of the meeting times listed above.  Volunteers can call 986-7235 to RSVP and to get more details.
