About the MSA

The Manitoba Sheep Association (MSA) is proud to represent over 400 sheep and lamb producers (both commercial and purebred producers) across the province. Our mission is to actively initiate, support and conduct programs and activities designed to stimulate and improve the well being of all segments of the sheep industry in Manitoba. We also present producer concerns and issues to government and other agricultural organizations. The MSA is a member of the Manitoba Forage Council and the Canadian Sheep Federation.

Job Purpose

The Executive Director is responsible for the successful leadership and management of the Manitoba Sheep Association, in accordance to the strategic direction set by the Board of Directors, Manitoba Sheep Association By laws and the Acts that govern the Manitoba Sheep Association and its membership.

Job Type: Part-Time

Accountability: to the Board of Directors

Responsibilities and Duties

Key Responsibilities

  • Participate with the Board of Directors in developing a vision and strategic plan to guide the organization.
  • Develop an operational plan which incorporates the goals and objectives of the strategic plan of the Manitoba Sheep Association
  • Work with Staff and Treasurer (and/or Finance Committee) to prepare a comprehensive annual budget
  • Oversee the planning, implementation and evaluation of the Manitoba Sheep Association ‘s programs and services
  • To provide advocacy for the Manitoba Sheep Association and its producers on provincial and federal governmental levels and within the sheep value chain to further the viability, expansion and prosperity of Manitoba sheep producers
  • Communicate with members to keep them informed of the work of the Manitoba Sheep Association and to identify changes in the industry served by the Manitoba Sheep Association
  • Establish good working relationships and collaborative arrangements with other commodity and related agricultural groups, sponsors, politicians, and other organizations to help achieve the goals of the Manitoba Sheep Association

Qualifications and Skills

Education

  • University degree in agriculture or a related field or equal related work experience

Professional designation

  • Eligible for professional designation such as Manitoba Institute of Agrologists

Work experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities

  • Knowledge of the challenges and opportunities of the current sheep industry as they relate to the Manitoba Sheep Association’s mission statement and strategic plan
  • Knowledge and experience of sheep production enabling the development of producer resources, programming and training to enhance the sustainability and viability of Manitoba sheep producers
  • Knowledge and experience of leadership and management principles as they relate to Manitoba Sheep Association an non-profit agricultural organization governed by the Manitoba Agricultural Producers Funding Act
  • Knowledge of all federal and provincial legislation applicable to the Manitoba Sheep Association and its’ producers
  • Knowledge and experience in financial management
  • Knowledge and experience of project management
  • Knowledge and experience in board governance and human resources management

Proficiency computer use for

  • Word processing,
  • Financial management
  • E-mail
  • Internet

Experience

  • 3 – 5 years of progressive management experience with a strong understanding of sheep production and the sheep industry as well as experience working in the voluntary sector organization.

Working Environment and Conditions

  • Executive Director will provide a complete home office, laptop and cell phone provided by Manitoba Sheep Association for association business.
  • Executive Director will be required to work evenings, weekends to accommodate activities such as Board meetings, to facilitate Manitoba Sheep Association programming and related events and represent the Manitoba Sheep Association at public events.
