job opportunity – North End Volunteer Care Coordinator (Summer Student) – Manitoba Energy Justice Coalition

 

The Manitoba Energy Justice Coalition (MEJC) is currently seeking applications for the position of North End Volunteer Care Coordinator to assist us by providing leadership in volunteer recruitment, retention and care, including best practices around team-building and fostering safe and inclusive spaces. Activities will focus on the North End, but may include travel to other neighbourhoods as part of engaging with North End residents and volunteers at various events and locations.

The position is 30 hours per week, $11/hour, beginning June 26th, or sooner, and finishing on August 26th, 2017 (9 weeks).

Please note that the position requires flexibility. Evening and weekend hours will be required based on outreach opportunities, and may include other duties as assigned to support MEJC’s staff and campaigning work.

Tasks & Responsibilities

• Responsible for recruiting & training volunteers.
• Support MEJC to schedule and staff the North End outreach teams with volunteers.
• Assist with providing ongoing training opportunities throughout the summer.
• Schedule and train volunteers for the local outreach team.
• Provide mentorship, coaching, and emotional support to volunteers on all teams.
• Maintain an ongoing list of tasks to be completed by the team.
• Enter all data collected from outreach into databases.
• Work in collaboration with the North End Outreach Lead.
• Follow up with MEJC’s campaigns coordinator regularly to monitor progress, coach team on their work, and to ensure activities are aligned with fostering an inclusive and safe work environment.
• Attend regular issue briefings with MEJC’s campaigns coordinator to ensure knowledge and understanding of developments in political arena and to ensure ongoing appropriate alignment between organizational needs and volunteer activities
• Provide an assessment of institutional practices MEJC can improve to become more safe and inclusive by conducting interviews and surveys with supporters, staff, and board members.

Qualifications

• Self-starting, extremely outgoing, energetic, efficient and approachable.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills; comfortable interacting with the public in various settings.
• Highly adaptable and resourceful.
• Comfortable working outdoors.
• Interest in a flexible schedule to accommodate tabling at events that may take place on evenings and weekends.
• Experience coordinating program/project logistics.
• Experience with event planning/co-ordination.
• Works well independently and as part of a team.
• Exceptionally organized with proven attention to details.
• Experience or knowledge of social networking avenues and public outreach
• Proven time management skills.
• Educational background or knowledge/experience in a relevant field (environmental science/studies; education; Indigenous studies, women’s and gender studies, sociology, urban and inner-city studies, community development, conflict resolution, team-building and fostering safe and inclusive spaces.)
• An understanding and sensitivity of cultural issues.
• Administrative capabilities, including computer skills.
• Access to the internet and cell phone with ability to respond to communications in a timely manner.
• Access to a reliable means of transportation.

Knowledge of the Manitoba Energy Justice Committee’s mandate and campaigns is an asset, but is not required (training will be provided).

Canada Summer Jobs Program Prerequisites

This position is funded through a Canada Summer Jobs grant. To be eligible for this position, all applicants must:
• Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of employment
• Have been registered as a full-time student in the previous academic year and intend to return to school on a full-time basis in the next academic year
• Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act
• Be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations
