Save Our Seine is seeking a River Keeper


SAVE OUR SEINE is a community-based non-profit organization and registered charity that envisions a sustainable and protected Seine River Greenway that provides a healthy habitat for vegetation and wildlife and contributes to the quality of life for all citizens. Its mission it to protect, preserve, and enhance the Seine River environment through education, awareness, and hands-on participation enabling all citizens to reconnect with their local environment.

POSITION: Seasonal term position (3 positions@ 400 hours each, possibly 1 position@150 hours)
TIME FRAME (APPROXIMATE): May 22 through August 17, 2018, depending on actual start date and duration of funding
WAGE RANGE: $11.50-$12.50/hour

ELIGIBILITY: These positions are funded by Urban Green Team. Candidates must be youth aged 15 to 29, living in Manitoba and legally entitled to work in Canada (have a valid Social Insurance Number) and have a valid Child Employment Permit if 15 years of age.

WORK LOCATION: Seine River Greenway from the Winnipeg floodway to the Red River.

Save Our Seine is looking for four physically-fit young people who:
• Would like to work outdoors in a natural setting on the Seine River
• Want to help keep the environment clean and the river navigable
• Do not mind getting dirty and wet
• Enjoy physical work carried out in a small, energetic, hard-working team
The job involves working on a team of 3 to 4 people to carry out the following activities:
• Working outdoors on the Seine River Greenway within Winnipeg (including in inclement weather)
• Removing garbage, trash, and woody debris from the Seine River, often using a rowboat, canoe, and other tools
• Cleaning and maintaining walking paths and riverbanks along the urban Seine River
• Maintaining SOS habitat restoration projects (including Niakwa Trail Rain Garden, The Triangle, The Meadow)
• Removing invasive plants along the riverbanks
• Providing set-up and clean-up support for Save Our Seine’s outdoor events
• Collecting water samples and using water quality testing equipment
• Adhering to safety policy/procedures (Provincial Workplace Safety and Health Act, Manitoba Safe Work, SOS)
• Valid Province of Manitoba Class 5 Driver’s License
• Safety training and personal protective equipment will be provided
• Aboriginal youth and visible minority youth are encouraged to apply
