Save Our Seine is seeking a Seine River Clean-up Coordinator



SAVE OUR SEINE is a community-based non-profit organization and registered charity. It has been keeping the urban Seine River in Winnipeg clean and navigable since 1990.

POSITION: Seasonal (400 to 480 hours)
TIME FRAME (APPROXIMATE): May 7, 2018 to August 10, 2018
WAGE RANGE: $16-$18/hour (depending on experience)
If funding from the Canada Summer Jobs program is approved, candidates must be: a Canadian citizen or permanent resident between 18 and 30 years of age, a full-time student (in a post-secondary institution) during the preceding academic year, intending to return to school on a full-time basis, and legally entitled to work. Foreign students are not eligible.

Under the supervision of the Executive Director, the Seine River Clean-up Coordinator will coordinate and lead the activities of the SOS Green Team River Keepers including:
• Removing garbage and woody debris from the river, often using a rowboat, canoe, and other tools
• Cleaning and maintaining walking paths and riverbanks along the urban Seine River
• Removing invasive plants along the riverbanks and at habitat restoration project sites
• Providing support for SOS’s outdoor events and programs (habitat enhancement, water monitoring, etc.)

As the Summer Seine River Clean-Up Coordinator, you will:
• Recruit and hire 3 to 4 Green Team River Keepers
• Purchase and maintain program and safety equipment
• Develop and implement a plan for orienting and training the River Keepers
• Coordinate all team activities and provide day-to-day supervision of the River Keepers and Greenway Gardener
• Apply your education in the fields of conservation, natural resources management, physical geography, greenspace management and/or environmental science to your daily activities
• Assist with SOS events and programs (public education, etc.); oversee water quality testing

• Physically able to perform the duties of the job, which includes working outdoors all day on the Seine River greenway in potentially extreme weather conditions, canoeing, and standing and walking for prolonged periods over unstable and/or uneven terrain
• Knowledge of Manitoba’s Safe Work practices and commitment to workplace safety and health
• Ability to safely use hand and power tools, equipment and technical instruments commonly used in natural area maintenance task work
• Enjoy physical work carried out in a small, energetic, hard-working team; high tolerance for being grimy and wet
• Valid Province of Manitoba Class 5 Driver’s Licence
• Available to work occasional evenings and weekends

• Familiarity with the urban Seine River from the floodway to the Red River
• Completion of at least 1 year in geography, environmental science, biological science, natural resources, green spaces management, or a related field or an equivalent combination of knowledge and work experience
• Human resources management skills: team leadership, supervision, and management experience, conflict resolution
• Knowledge of riparian plants and animals, native and introduced species identification
