Save Our Seine is seeking a Seine River Greenway Gardener



SAVE OUR SEINE is a community-based non-profit organization and registered charity that envisions a sustainable and protected Seine River Greenway that provides a healthy habitat for vegetation and wildlife and contributes to the quality of life for all citizens. Its mission it to protect, preserve, and enhance the Seine River environment through education, awareness, and hands-on participation enabling all citizens to reconnect with their local environment.

POSITION: Part-time or seasonal term position (400 to a maximum of 515 hours)
TIME FRAME (APPROXIMATE): May 7, 2018 to mid-Oct (part-time); Sept/Oct hours may be condensed into May to Aug (full-time)
WAGE RANGE: $12.50-$13.50/hour
ELIGIBILITY: This position is funded with the support of The Winnipeg Foundation. Candidates must be eligible to work in Canada. There is no maximum age; candidates over 30 years of age are encouraged to apply. The position is suitable for a student (seasonal term position) or someone looking for part-time work.

WORK LOCATION: Seine River Greenway from the Winnipeg floodway to the Red River. Key work locations will include the Niakwa Trail Rain Garden and other habitat restoration projects (e.g., The Triangle, The Meadow) within the Greenway.

Under the supervision of the Seine River Clean-up Coordinator, the Greenway Gardener will work with River Keepers and community volunteers on a variety of gardening and habitat enhancement projects along the Seine River Greenway. You will:
• Restore natural habitats at key locations; replace invasive weeds with self-sustaining native plants (including wildflowers, grasses, shrubs, or trees) to improve the ecological quality of the habitats along high-use trails
• Develop a planting plan for filling in gaps in the Niakwa Trail Rain Garden
• Prepare a list of native plants and contact supplier to reserve plants; place orders; arrange for delivery
• Assist with purchasing gardening equipment, materials, and supplies (watering equipment, wire mesh, native plants)
• Prepare the project sites for planting, install new plants, maintain natural spaces as needed to encourage new plantings (removing invasive weeds, watering new plantings, and litter removal)
• Make arrangements with partners for assistance with watering (Naturalist Services, Superstore, St. Vital Biz)
• Organize and lead volunteer events to remove weeds/litter from the rain garden, project sites, trails, and riverbanks
• Protect valuable riparian trees from damage by beavers by wrapping the trees with wire mesh
• Evaluate the establishment of the new plantings and the overall condition of the habitat restoration projects
• Assist with the delivery of SOS programs, public programs, and special events as required

• Physically able to perform the duties of the job, which includes working outdoors in fair or poor weather conditions; bending for prolonged periods
• Knowledge of Manitoba’s Safe Work practices
• Ability to safely use gardening equipment commonly used in natural area maintenance task work
• Ability to work independently (self-motivated, reliable), work in a team, and lead volunteers

• Familiarity with the native plants and invasive species of Manitoba and a willingness to learn
• Knowledge and/or work experience in horticulture, conservation, biology, natural resources management, physical geography, environmental science, green spaces management, environmental science, or a related field
• Valid Province of Manitoba Class 5 Driver’s Licence (desired); pesticide applicator certificate (asset)
• Available to work occasional evenings and weekends as needed
