Protect our Water

Protect Our Water is a household water conservation and stewardship program designed to help you minimize your water usage.  We conducted our pilot stage in the spring and summer of 2010, offering water audits to households across Winnipeg, and will be taking it to four other communities within the next two years.

Whether or not you are participating in the audit program, you can follow our guide for reducing your water usage.  Please call (204) 943-0318 for more information.

WHAT CAN YOU DO TO PROTECT AND CONSERVE WATER?

  • Fill your Dishwasher and Washing Machine completely before you run them

Full or empty, your dishwasher uses the same amount of water

  • Install a Low-Flush Toilet, Low-Flow Faucet Aerators, and Shower Heads

These replacements can reduce the amount of water you use in your shower and toilet by up to 50%!  Enrol in Manitoba Hydro's free Power Smart Water & Energy Saver Program to recieve free low flow faucet aerators and shower heads.

  • Install a Toilet Dam

Even a brick or water-filled plastic bottle in the toilet tank will reduce the water your toilet uses with each flush!

  • Turn off the Tap while you Shave

Save some money and a lot of water!

  • Fix the Leaky Faucets

If you don't use it, you lose it!

  • RECYCLE!

The less waste we put in landfills, the less chance it has to get into our ground and surface water.

  • Limit the use of Fertilizers & Pesticides on your Grass and Gardens

See the Manitoba Eco-Network's webpage on Organic Lawncare.

  • Start to Compost

Compost is the natural way to fertilize. It's free and your garden will love you! ...read more

  • Clean up after your Pets!

Pet waste can contaminate surface or groundwater so it should stay in the
trash, not on the grass.

  • Properly Dispose of Hazardous Household Waste

Paints, chemicals & cleaners should not be flushed down the toilet or pured down the drain!...read more
