POSITION: 3-4 full-time seasonal positions@350 to 400 hours each, possibly 1 July/August or P/T position@150 hours
TIME FRAME (APPROXIMATE): 5 to 12 consecutive weeks between May 25 and August 31, 2021, depending on funding
WAGE RANGE: $11.90-$13.90/hour
WORK LOCATION: Seine River Greenway from the Winnipeg floodway to the Red River.
ELIGIBILITY: These positions are funded by Urban Green Team. Candidates must be youth aged 15 to 29, living in Manitoba and legally entitled to work in Canada (have a valid Social Insurance Number) and have a valid Child Employment Permit if 15 years of age. Indigenous, Metis, and visible minority youth are encouraged to apply.

POSITION OVERVIEW:
River Keepers require no prior work experience. Under the supervision of the Stewardship and Education Coordinator, River Keepers will work as a team to clean and maintain the river and the natural parks along the Seine River Greenway. As a River Keeper, you will:
• Get hot, wet, and muddy while doing physical work outdoors (including in poor weather)
• Remove garbage, trash, and woody debris from the Seine River, often using a rowboat, canoe, and other tools
• Clean and maintain walking trails, riverbanks, natural spaces, and habitat projects (weeding, watering, litter removal)
• Maintain SOS habitat restoration projects (including Niakwa Trail Rain Garden, The Triangle, The Meadow)
• Remove invasive plants along the riverbanks (buckthorn, burdock, thistle, etc.)
• Plant native species
• Protect riparian trees from damage by beavers by wrapping the trees with wire mesh
• Assist with inventories of natural features and monitoring (photography, field notes, GPS, water testing)
• Collect water samples and use water monitoring equipment
• Assist with the delivery of public events
• Attend safety training and use personal protective equipment as required (training and equipment provided)
• Adhere to all safety policy/procedures (Provincial Workplace Safety and Health Act, Manitoba Safe Work, SOS)
REQUIRED:
• Passion for nature, the outdoors, and/or the Seine River
• Desire to work outdoors; high tolerance for insects, dirt, mud, and sweat
• Physical ability to perform the duties of the job
• Ability to work on a small, energetic, hard-working team and to work with community volunteers
DESIRED:
• Valid Province of Manitoba Class 5 Driver’s License
• Willingness to learn about the Seine River, its natural and cultural history and share knowledge with the public
• Interest in a career in the natural sciences, biology, physical geography, interpretation, or a related field
• Interest in returning in future years as a River Keeper Lead Hand, or Coordinator

SAVE OUR SEINE is a community-based environmental organization and registered charity. Its mission it to protect, preserve, and enhance the Seine River through education, awareness, and hands-on participation that enables all citizens to connect with the river’s natural and cultural heritage.
