The Lake Winnipeg Foundation is seeking volunteers to assist with its Community-Based Monitoring Network by collecting water samples for phosphorus testing in Southern Manitoba. Phosphorus is a major contributor to algae blooms in Lake Winnipeg. Volunteers help identify “phosphorus hotspots” by sampling local waterways during the spring melt and after large rain events.
Sampling is quick (approximately 5 minutes per event) and occurs 2–3 times per week during the spring melt period, then biweekly once water flow stabilizes. Volunteers are matched to sites close to their home or school, and training and materials are provided. This is a great opportunity for students or community members interested in environmental science and water quality monitoring.
