Description:

Volunteer opportunity in Southern Manitoba!

We are looking for volunteers from the Brandon, Westman, Eastman, Interlake, and Central Region to help us conduct water sampling throughout the 2024 season.

The Lake Winnipeg Community-Based Monitoring Network samples for phosphorus, the nutrient responsible for the algae blooms on Lake Winnipeg. We work with local organizations and citizens dispersed across southern Manitoba to identify localized areas that contribute higher amounts of phosphorus to local waterways than other areas, aka “phosphorus hotspots”.

Volunteers sample frequently throughout the spring melt and after large rain events to ensure phosphorus runoff is captured. During the spring melt period (which can be anywhere from 2 weeks to one month depending on the speed of thawing and the amount of snow) the time commitment for volunteers is to sample 2-3 times per week and once the spring melt is over and flows stabilize, sampling goes down to once every 2 weeks unless there is a large rain event in which case we will notify you to sample. Our sites are located across southern Manitoba and volunteers will be matched to sites that are close to them.
