Statement on Government of Manitoba’s Approval of Wanipigow Sand Project & Selkirk Glass Facility

The Manitoba Eco-Network stands in solidarity with Camp Morning Star and other organizations opposing the Government of Manitoba’s decision to dismiss appeals for Canadian Premium Sand Inc.’s Wanipigow Sand Project and Selkirk Solar Glass Facility. Key concerns remain regarding Manitoba’s environmental assessment and licensing process including:

• Inadequate public information about plans for environmental and human health protection.
• Limited opportunities for meaningful public input, with no public hearings held for either project.
•  A very weak appeal process, with the same department responsible for the initial decision conducting the review of licensing and approval decisions.

Urgent action is needed to update The Environment Act and improve the environmental decision-making process, ensuring the serious consideration of citizen concerns and establishing stronger mechanisms for environmental and human health protection, both presently and in the future.
