Water + Climate Justice: Advancing intersectional approaches - U of M Centre for Human Rights Research
November 5, 2025 10:00 am - 12:30 pm
Online
U of M Centre for Human Rights Research:
"Next week, Nov. 5 at 11 am CST, join us for the next webinar in The Last Drop Water Researchers Speaker Series 💧 with panelists Aimée Craft (University of Ottawa), Linda Barrientos-Mendez (University of Denver), Deborah McGregor (Anishinabe, Whitefish River First Nation, Professor, University of Calgary), Anaís Roque (Duke University), and Sameer H. Shah (University of Washington). Swipe to learn more about our speakers ➡
Water and climate change are inextricably linked — extreme weather events are making water more scarce, more unpredictable, and more polluted. These impacts throughout the water cycle threaten all aspects of human relationships with water. Work at the intersection of water and climate justice is needed to understand how socio-cultural, political, and economic relationships at different scales serve to co-create and maintain injustices in diverse hydrosocial systems (i.e., transition to low-carbon futures using large-scale hydroelectricity generation requires assessment of water justice impacts)."

ESRI Canada:
" The Geo-Generalist Era: Where Spatial Meets Everything Today’s geospatial thinkers are increasingly “geo-generalists”—individuals who apply spatial thinking across many disciplines. From public health to marketing, from climate science to logistics, GIS is becoming a core competency for professionals in a wide range of fields.
This year, we're celebrating the expanding influence of GIS and the professionals who bridge disciplines to solve complex, real-world challenges using spatial insight. It goes beyond a GIS person only working in the mapping department: now, GIS is supporting strategic thinking, empowering cities and communities, and taking our understanding of the world in new directions."

Damien Lee of Gimiwan on Decolonizing your Environmentalism: 3 Case Studies - Sustainability Network
Damien Lee of Gimiwan on Decolonizing your Environmentalism: 3 Case Studies - Sustainability Network
November 26, 2025 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm
Online via Zoom
Sustainability Network:
"Canada's ENGO sector is in its infancy in terms of promoting decolonization. In this session, the Sustainability Network and Gimiwan Consulting will present three case studies drawn from ENGOs attempting to implement decolonial strategies in their work. The case studies will unpack successes and failures with an eye towards promoting broad sector learning about what decolonization can look like in environmental justice work in Canada.
Case Study 1: Working Within the Constraints of Colonial Institutions: A key finding of this case study
Case Study 2: The Learning by Doing Model: Details a project where the resurgence of Indigenous law led to transformation change, and calls on ENGOs to begin the work of decolonization rather than endlessly learning about it.
Case Study 3: Advancing Decolonization as a National Organization: Explores the challenge that national ENGOs face when attempting to create place-based relationships with Indigenous communities.
NOTE: The three case studies will be shared live and emailed to all webinar registrants after the webinar.
This workshop is for environmental non-governmental organizations working in Canada, specifically those that engage Indigenous nations in some way." For more information: https://www.sustainabilitynetwork.ca/events/damien-lee-of-gimiwan-on-decolonizing-your-environmentalism-3-case-studies
