Distribution and Abundance of Mosses At Waggle Springs - Westman Naturalists
Distribution and Abundance of Mosses At Waggle Springs - Westman Naturalists
January 8, 2026 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
Brodie Building Rm 4-34 at Brandon University
Westman Naturalists: "We’re excited to have Emily Tesarski, a science student at Brandon University, share results from her local study on mosses. Mosses are non-vascular plants that require specific conditions (including access to water) to successfully establish. Waggle Springs (now Wabano Aki) is a natural spring site near Brandon that contains mosses Tomentypnum nitens, Drepanocladus aduncus, and Aulacomnium palustre. This study aims to investigate the relationship between these mosses and factors such as elevation and shrub presence. It also aims to quantify the moss presence, and identify additional moss species in Waggle Springs.
You can attend our talks in person at the Brodie Building or join via Zoom. For Zoom, visit the link in our talks story highlight or sign up for an email reminder at https://forms.gle/ynixvRLSx5xfSJyC9. Thursday, January 8th 2026 - 7pm Brodie Building Rm 4-34 at Brandon University"

Snowshoe Walk - CPAWS MB
January 10, 2026 11:00 am - 2:00 pm
2795 Ness Ave, Winnipeg, MB R3J 3S4, Canada
CPAWS MB:
"What to Bring on Your Hike (Winter Edition)
- A park pass is required for all vehicles entering provincial parks. An annual pass (which can be used in two vehicles) is $44.50. Daily permits are $9.50.
- Check the weather forecast and dress appropriately! See our winter clothing tips below.
- Bring at least two bottles of water: you can leave one in your vehicle on a short hike; you’ll want both on a long hike.
- Snacks are a great way to keep your energy up along the trail. Many trails don’t have restaurants or stores nearby so you may also want to pack a picnic lunch.
- Hand sanitizer (Most trails have outhouses, not modern toilets.)
- Any medication you may need (like antihistamines, your asthma inhaler, or an EpiPen)
- A safety whistle, pocket flashlight, and a basic first-aid kit (not required, but a good idea any time you’re in the wilderness)"

Land & Water Program Winter Orientation - Land and Water UM
January 10, 2026 3:00 pm - 6:00 pm
Land and Water UM: "As we all adjust to the new semester and return to classes and work, we are also beginning the second half of the 2025/26 Land & Water Program! A reminder that our programming is following the theme of Wildlife and Storytelling, so if that is of interest to you, consider joining us for our Winter Term Orientation!
We will be working as a group to prepare our own feast, learning how to properly cook moose meat and different ways to make bannock. With this, we will also be discussing the importance of sustainable hunting and sourcing of traditional meats, as well as the cultural and community aspect of cooking together! We will also be playing games, doing some ice-breakers and going over the tentative schedule for winter events. So if you cannot attend the full orientation, still consider dropping by to play a game or try some food!
To ensure that food and supplies are enough for everyone, you are highly encouraged to RSVP/register for this event in advance. You can do so at this link https://forms.office.com/r/3SbT9tNAGc Or by screenshotting and holding down on the QR code in the poster above.
