Overview: The managing director will lead CAPE’s internal processes, relationships and team
dynamics, with a focus on 1. people and culture and 2. finance. They will manage several team
members and guide CAPE’s justice, equity, diversity and inclusion practices.

About the Role: Reporting to the executive director, the managing director provides strategic
guidance for CAPE’s internal operations and team systems, strengthening financial processes
and overall organizational effectiveness for a growing team. They work closely with the
executive director and senior staff across the organization.
This new role offers an exciting opportunity to shape its scope, experiment within a skilled and
invested team, and make a significant contribution to CAPE’s mission.

Responsibilities & Duties
Organizational Leadership & Culture
● Improve internal staff communication and coordination (e.g. ensure staff working on
similar projects or issue areas are connected and aware of one another’s relevant work)
● Identify and resolve team functionality and operational challenges, including conflict
management
● Supervise and mentor several managerial and senior staff, including supporting
workplan development and performance processes
● Plan and facilitate staff retreats alongside the executive director
Financial Oversight
● Design the annual budget alongside the executive director; conduct budget reforecasting
at least quarterly
● Oversee the accuracy of monthly and annual financial reports, and improve CAPE’s
financial systems
● Build team understanding of budgets, grants, and organizational finances to ensure
funder compliance and enable strategic implementation of program and campaign goals
Policy & Operational Planning
● Inform internal policy development and operational plans in close collaboration with the
director of operations and HR
Justice, Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (JEDI)
● Advance internal justice, equity, diversity and inclusion efforts in collaboration with other
members of the CAPE team
Additional Responsibilities
● This role will require some travel, in addition to our staff retreat(s), and occasional
evening or weekend work for meetings

Required Skills
Leadership & People Management
● 10+ years of management experience in an advocacy, charitable, or non-profit context
● Proven ability to supervise and support managers and senior staff
● Experience assessing team dynamics, managing conflict, and implementing
improvements to organizational functioning
● Strong people management skills, including supporting staff work planning, goal-setting,
and accountability
● Strong written and verbal facilitation skills, including ability to lead staff meetings and
retreats
Financial oversight and budgeting
● Demonstrated experience developing organizational budgets
● Strong financial literacy, with the ability to oversee the accuracy of financial reports and
monitor organizational financial health
● Experience improving financial systems, processes, or controls
● Experience managing grants
Strategic and operational planning
● Experience contributing to internal policy development and operational planning
● Ability to translate organizational strategy into clear plans, processes, and priorities
Equity-centred leadership
● Demonstrated commitment to justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion
● Experience advancing equity-focused initiatives within an organization
Preferred Skills or Assets
● Experience planning and facilitating multi-day staff retreats or organizational planning
sessions
● Familiarity with financial management in a $2M+ charitable context, including working
with auditors or finance committees
● Experience managing a complex system of grants and building financial literacy across
teams within a charitable organization
● Training or lived experience related to anti-oppression, anti-racism, or Indigenous-led or
equity-centred organizational practices
● Strong change-management skills, including navigating organizational growth,
transitions, or complexity
● Ability to speak French is an asset

Working Environment & Expectations
● 30-hour work week: CAPE provides a flexible and supportive work environment with a
standard 30-hour work week (15 to 20 hours for part-time employees)
● Flexible scheduling: Employees have flexible scheduling, provided they are available
for meetings with colleagues and external stakeholders. Some evening and weekend
work may be required.
● Travel: Occasional travel may be required in addition to our annual staff retreat

● Generous paid time off: 4 weeks of vacation and up to 3.5 weeks of personal/sick
