Project Summary
Greenway School Community Forest
On May 8th, 2024, as part of the ongoing "Climate Safe, Green City" project, the Manitoba Eco-Network helped plant 51 trees at Greenway School, located in Winnipeg's West End (390 Burnell Street). The trees are the beginnings of the Greenway School Community Forest, a greenspace open to students, educators, and community members.
This was a collaborative project that included Greenway School, the Manitoba Eco-Network, Green Action Centre, Trees Winnipeg, Green Communities Canada, Green Drop and the West End Resource Centre.
How did students get involved with the project?
Students were invited to participate in the process, and get some hands-on tree planting experience.
Each class at Greenway School had the opportunity to learn from an arborist from one of our partner organizations, who demonstrated to the students about how to plant a tree. Tree pits were pre-drilled the day before, and the species planted included trembling aspen, burr oak and crabapple, with two cedar trees saved for the final planting at the barbecue.
What's the benefit?
In the future, the trees will provide a natural playspace in the middle of the inner city, one that doubles as an informal outdoor cooling centre, with a shaded area from the tree canopy. Adding greenspace to a neighbourhood can have positive effect on the whole community, for both natural cooling and tree biodiversity within the West End. Greenway School’s previous naturalizing projects will be enhanced by the addition of this forest project.
The Manitoba Eco-Network was able to assist this project financially with over $1700+ thanks to our donors. These funds were used to cover the essential costs of tree watering and maintenance, to ensure these newly planted trees flourish for years to come.
