We are seeking energetic and assertive Conservation Ambassadors to inspire Manitobans to take action on protecting our lands and waters this summer.

If you like being outside and talking to people, this is the job for you!

You will also get to lead events like group hikes and paddle nights to help connect Manitobans to nature.

While you will often work with a partner – either another staffer or a volunteer – you must be comfortable leading events and performing outreach on your own.

This is a full-time summer job which starts in early May and ends in either August or September. You will be expected to work weekends and some evenings. The position is based out of Winnipeg.

The hourly wage will be a base rate of $16 with a performance bonus that could bring it up to as much as $25/hour.

Responsibilities:
– Manage outreach tables at special events and high-traffic areas such as the Winnipeg Fringe Festival, the Gimli Film Festival and the Summer Entertainment Series at Assiniboine Park.
– Lead events such as group hikes and paddle nights.
– Engage the public to educate them about conservation issues and encourage them to support CPAWS campaigns.
– Promote opportunities for citizens to become actively involved in conservation efforts in Manitoba.
– Communicate about CPAWS initiatives and their importance to environmental health and community sustainability in a manner consistent with CPAWS’ mission, vision and values.
– Sell t-shirts and other fundraising merchandise.
– Take photos and create social media posts to help promote events and outreach tables.
– Track the effectiveness of your efforts (postcards signed, merchandise sales) and adapt procedures and plans as required.
– Ensure that data from postcards is entered into our database in a timely manner.
– Support the development of the outreach schedule.
– Other duties as required.

Qualifications:
– Self-starting, extremely outgoing, energetic, assertive, efficient and approachable.
– Passionate about conservation issues.
– Ability to work effectively both independently and as a team.
– Ability to work effectively with minimal supervision, organize work independently, fulfill assigned tasks, and meet crucial deadlines.
– Strong written and verbal English communications skills.
– Experience with event planning/coordination is an asset.
– Experience working with youth, volunteers and the general public is an asset.
– Experience working for a non-profit is an asset.
– Social media skills are an asset.

Physical & Other Demands:
– The ability to work flexible hours.
– Will be expected to perform outreach work on some evenings and most weekends.
– The ability to lift bins of outreach materials that weigh up to 40 pounds and to pull them in a wagon across bumpy terrain.
– Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle. (Mileage reimbursed at government rates.)
– Will be required to obtain first aid certification: training will be paid for by the employer.
– Clear criminal record and vulnerable sector check is required.

Diversity and Inclusion:
CPAWS is committed to being an inclusive organization and is working to better reflect and represent the diversity of the communities we serve. We encourage members from the following communities to apply and self-declare in your application: Indigenous, Black, People of Colour, Immigrant or refugee, People with disabilities, LGBT2SQ+.

Being a member of an equity group is among our hiring selection criteria. Your declaration of membership in any of these groups will remain confidential.

Sustainability Team: Manitoba Marathon

At the Manitoba Marathon we are passionate and dedicated to reducing our carbon footprint, not just on race weekend, but year round. We sort all waste by hand on race weekend and ensure we achieve out goal of 85% waste diversion.

We have had the same sustainability team lead for a number of years, however after this year he will no longer be able to take on this role:

What we need:
-For 2024 a person who will work and shadow under our current team leader, this person will be the one to take over the role from 2025 onwards
-The team lead will recruit volunteers for race weekend, information distribution and shift management.
-We estimate the total time required for this role would be 20 ish hours, a majority of it being race week (Saturday June 15-5 hours, Sunday June 16-8 hours, Monday June 17-8 hours) and then scattered hours recruiting people leading up to the event
-This would be a paid position

If you have someone in mind for this role, or volunteering on our green team, please reach out to Manager@manitobamarathon.mb.ca.

Water Sampling Volunteer: Lake Winnipeg Foundation: Lake Winnipeg Foundation

Volunteer opportunity in Southern Manitoba!

We are looking for volunteers from the Brandon, Westman, Eastman, Interlake, and Central Region to help us conduct water sampling throughout the 2024 season.

The Lake Winnipeg Community-Based Monitoring Network samples for phosphorus, the nutrient responsible for the algae blooms on Lake Winnipeg. We work with local organizations and citizens dispersed across southern Manitoba to identify localized areas that contribute higher amounts of phosphorus to local waterways than other areas, aka “phosphorus hotspots”.

Volunteers sample frequently throughout the spring melt and after large rain events to ensure phosphorus runoff is captured. During the spring melt period (which can be anywhere from 2 weeks to one month depending on the speed of thawing and the amount of snow) the time commitment for volunteers is to sample 2-3 times per week and once the spring melt is over and flows stabilize, sampling goes down to once every 2 weeks unless there is a large rain event in which case we will notify you to sample. Our sites are located across southern Manitoba and volunteers will be matched to sites that are close to them.
